Axial fan is named for the direction of the airflow it creates. Blades rotate around an axis and cause air to flow through in an axial or parallel direction to the axis. The rotating produces a pressure difference, and hence force, to cause a flow through the fan. The performance of an axial fan is determined by the number and shape of the blades. Also using the mounting plate with a bell-mouth shaped inlet cone will create a smooth laminar flow into the suction side of the fan and optimize the fan performance. The axial fan is normally used to move a lot of air but at a lower static pressure. The optimum operating area on an axial fan characteristic is below what is called the stall dip. Above the optimum range of operation, the flow across the upper and lower sides of the impeller blades becomes turbulent and the impeller starts to go into an aerodynamic stall, causing the fan to vibrate and make lots of noise. |
